William F. “Bill” Roberts, Jr., 71, of Elkhart, passed away on Oct. 4, 2018 at home. He was born on July 11, 1947 in Warren, OH to William F. and Dorothy J. (Haffner) Roberts, Sr. He married Mary Setting on Jan. 13, 1968 in Champion, OH. She preceded him in death on Aug. 22, 1988. He married Ona M. Menninger on Oct. 10, 2000 in Goshen, IN.
Bill is survived by his wife, Ona, of Elkhart; 3 daughters: Rebecca (Russell) England of Battle Creek, MI, Danielle (Wayne) Howard of Kalamazoo, MI and Kathleen (Elliot) Terry of Macomb, MI; a step-son, Calvin (Patty Gertz) Menninger of Elkhart; a step-daughter, Tammy (Jerry) Menninger-Lundy of Elkhart; 12 Grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are 2 sisters, Laura Anderson, of Cortland, OH and Dottie Russell of Kingston, MO and a brother, Mark Roberts, of Bellevue, MI.
He was preceded in death by a son, William F. Roberts, III and an adopted son, Paul Setting, a grandson, Justin Roberts, as well as 3 sisters: Rebecca Roberts, Elaine Briggs and Roberta Anderson.
Bill served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy and the Army Reserves. He served in the Vietnam War. He was employed in Goshen at Workflow One as a printing press operator. He was a member of the VFW, Silversides Submarine Veteran’s Group and the Purdue Extension of the Michiana Master Gardener’s Assoc. He loved to hunt, fish, read and garden.
Friends may visit with the family from 3-5 PM on Thursday Oct. 11 at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home. Military honors will be rendered by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard at 5 pm. According to his wishes, cremation will take place.
