Bernice Gilbert

Bernice Gilbert, 77, of Elkhart, IN passed away at Elkhart General Hospital on May 15, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family. Bernice was born on December 7, 1947, in Harvey, IL to Robert and Helen Smith. Bernice married David Gilbert on June 5, 1976.

Bernice and David spent almost 49 years together. During that time, they grew their beautiful family into what it is today. Family was one of the most important things to Bernice. She enjoyed any time she could with them and often took her grandchildren shopping whenever she could.

Bernice is survived by her loving husband, David Gilbert; 3 sons, Troy Kantz of Elkhart, IN, Scott (Amy) Kantz of Middlebury, IN, and David (Robin) Kantz of Goshen, IN; 7 Grandchildren, 8 Great-Grandchildren, and a sister, Susie Squyres. Bernice was preceded in death by her mother and father; sister, Jean Rice; 2 brothers, Harold Smith, and Robert Smith. Bernice will be dearly missed by all those that loved and knew her.

In keeping with Bernice's wishes, no formal services will be held at this time.
