Carol Jean Smith

Carol Jean Smith, 94, of Wakarusa, IN., passed away on August 20, 2024 at The Waters of Wakarusa. Carol was born on September 12, 1929 to Fred and Maude Headley in Elkhart, IN. Carol married Max E. Smith on October 10, 1948 in Elkhart, IN., he preceded her in death on November 11, 1999.

Carol worked for CTS in Elkhart for over 27 years, she also worked at Whitehall and Miles Laboratory. In her 50’s she graduated from Southwestern Michigan College with a nursing degree. Where she began her nursing home career for over 25 years. Carol was famous with her family for making the best pies. She had a love for her animals and light houses. She loved to spend time with her friends and family, especially her grandchildren.

Carol is survived by her son Greg (Carol Jean) Smith of Goshen, IN and Pamela Smith & Stan Glanders of Elkhart, IN; grandchildren Heather (Marty) Clanton, Jennifer (Chad) Leiby, Lisette (Ryan) Cheresson and Hillary (Kossi) Yawli; great-grandchildren Austin (Taylar) Clanton, Bethany (Curtis) Troyer, Allison Clanton, CJ Leiby & Adeline Russell, Elom Yawli, Zoe Yawli and Fig Cheresson, and her sister Delores Rossi of Elkhart, IN. Carol was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, Karen Johnson and her siblings James Bannon, Janet Hall and Frederick Headley.

Visitation will be held from 10am- 12pm on Saturday, September 14, 2024 at Grace Lutheran Church, 831 West Marion Street, Elkhart, IN 46516. A memorial service will be held at 12pm at the church. Sister Nora Frost will officiate. Carol Jean was laid to rest next to her husband Max at Adamsville Cemetery in Edwardsburg, MI.
