Eugene J. Hughes

Eugene J. Hughes, age 96, of Elkhart passed away on Monday, October 3, 2022 at his granddaughter’s home in Mishawaka, IN. Eugene was born on July 7, 1926 to James and Margurite Hughes in Freeport, IL. He married the love of his life Ramona E. Deemer on November 19, 1947 in Freeport, IL., she preceded him in death in March 2011.

Eugene graduated from high School and was the owner and operator of Ben Franklin Stone in Elkhart for 18 years until they closed their doors in 1985. He loved spending time with his family and friends. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bristol, IN

Eugene is survived by his daughter Linda Nye of Elkhart; grandchildren Michelle (Robin) Sailor of Mishawaka, IN. and John (Juanita) Nye of Wakarusa, IN; great-grandchildren Brook (Kris) Watson and Nicholas Followell; great-great-grandchildren Elliana Watson and Knicholas Clark; and his sister Sylvia Rupnow of Fort Atkinson, WI. Eugene was preceded in death by his parents James and Margurite Hughes, wife Ramona, daughter Carol Jean Hughes, and sisters Thelma Clancy and Jeannette Schlichting.

Visitation will be from 5-8 pm on Sunday, October 9, 2022 at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home, 1531 Cobblestone Blvd., Elkhart, IN 46514. Mass of Christian burial will at 11am on Monday, October 10, 2022 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 411 West Vistula Street, Bristol, IN 46507 where visitation will be one hour before mass at the church. Burial will be at 2 pm central time on Tuesday, October 11, 2022 at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Stockton, IL.
