John Carter McAtee, age 76 of Elkhart, IN passed away at his home surrounded by family on Friday, April 3,2026. John Jr was born on December 6, 1949, in Terre Haute, IN to Virginia K. (Crutchfield) and John C. McAtee Sr.
John is survived by his significant other Carla J Brossman, daughter Shannon N. and husband Cory Ayres, along with three Granddaughters, Ashley N., Addison E., and Alexandria V. Ayres, all of Lakeway Texas. His only sibling is sister Kathryn B. Annis of Mishawaka IN. John was preceded in death by his parents Virginia and John McAtee, Sr., and his brother in law Robert Annis.
John graduated from Elkhart High School - class of 1967. He was a member of the Honor Society, while lettering in three sports Tennis, Basketball and golf, which he enjoyed into his later years. In 1972 John graduated from Indiana University with a Bachelor of Science Degree and was a member of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity.
John retired from NIBCO (Northern Indiana Brass Co.) after 43 years of service in Customer Service, Distribution, Sales & Marketing and finally the last few years in Technical Services. He worked in various locations throughout his career - Central Valley NY, Houston TX and Elkhart, IN. After retiring John enjoyed his home on Simonton Lake and like his father was an avid Notre Dame fan.
In 2004 John met Carla Brossman. Together they enjoyed Entertaining Family and friends with cook outs, boating and especially the July 4" Poker Run and Fireworks while enjoying the best viewing location on the lake. He also volunteered for the Elkhart Jazz Festival and had the responsibility for the Musicians Hospitality Suite. After 6 months of retirement John suffered a stroke which substantially changed his life and was a major contributor to his death.
Visitation will be 10-11 am on Thursday, April 16, 2026 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 30888 CR 6, Elkhart, IN memorial service will be held at 11am at the church, with Pastor Spencer Mielke performing the service.
