Martin Luther Smith

Martin "Marty" Luther Smith, age 87, of Elkhart, IN passed away at his home on Sunday, February 1, 2026. Marty was born on May 14,1938 to William and Geneva Smith in Lisbon, OH. He married the love of his life, Donna Whitcomb, on September 16, 1956, they celebrated 60 wonderful years together. She preceded him in death on September 7, 2016.

Marty is survived by his wonderful children, Patricia l. Leer of Elkhart, Martin W. "Mike" Smith of Elkhart and Christine A. (Richard) Hack of Bristol, IN., his loving grandchildren, Nicholas leer, Andrew Hack, Eric (Sarah Gerkin) Smith, Alaina Mendoza and his amazing great-grandchildren, Emma, Ethan, Anastasia, Alexandria, Vincent, Xavier, Christopher, and Callahan. Also left behind is a ½ brother Ronald "Butch" (Bobbi) Rogers of Florida. Other dear to heart family members are Michael Leer, Lisa Smith, several nieces, nephews and a special friend Rosie Pickrell of Elkhart, IN., Marty was preceded in death by his parents, William and Geneva Smith, wife Donna Smith, daughter Kathleen Smith, brothers William "Bill" Smith and Thomas Glen "Jim" Smith, his grandson Christopher M. Smith and his little pup Marley.

Marty graduated from Elkhart High School. He began his career at Miles Laboratory in Elkhart, IN and worked in sales and distribution at Sheppard Products, DG Shelter Products, Delta Homes Corporation and in manufactured housing. He was known for being a sharp dressed man, with a kind heart towards his fellow workers and friends. Marty enjoyed being outdoors, from working in his yard, to playing golf or simply riding around town in his convertible of course with his favorite pup, Marley by his side. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, making memories when he played a little tune on his harmonica. Marty will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

Visitation will be from 11am-1pm on Friday, February 6, 2026 at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home, 1531 Cobblestone Blvd., Elkhart, IN 46514 where funeral services will be held at 1pm. Marty will be laid to rest near his wife Donna and daughter Kathy at the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum at Rice Cemetery in Elkhart, IN.
