Mildred Evelyn Welker, age 93, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully on February 21, 2019, at Elkhart Hospice House. She was born June 25,1925 in Three Rivers, Michigan to William Bryan and Edith Merill Jacobs. Her husband, Robert E. "Pinky" Welker preceded her in death July, 25th , 2018.
Millie met Robert (Bob) E. Welker in 1945, They were both employed by Conn, in Elkhart, but worked in different departments. Bob was smitten the first time he saw Millie. He told some of his coworkers that he was going to ask Millie on a date. They teased him saying she would never agree to go out with him. He bet them that not only would she agree to go out with him, but that she would be his sweetheart. Millie agreed to go out with Bob, however, when he drove his car in a snow storm to White Pigeon, she was not there. Heartbroken and bewildered, Bob drove back to Elkhart. As he was driving down Main Street, he saw Millie with a girlfriend and two other fellas walking into the movie theater. Bob parked the car and purchased a ticket to the movie. He sat down right behind Millie. After the movie, Bob took Millie for ice cream and they were married on February 22nd, 1946.
Millie was a twin from a large family with thirteen siblings. She treasured her family and would stay in touch with cards and letters. Millie enjoyed crafting, canning, gardening and traveling with the love of her life, Bob. They traveled to multiple states and parts of the world.
Millie is survived by her siblings Richard Jacobs, David Jacobs, June Ruggles, and Marie Cole, daughter Cathy L. Taylor of Bristol, IN, her grandchildren; Scott Klein, Jackie DeWald, Shana Pittman, Samantha Johnson, Michael Johnson, Thomas Johnson, and Stephanie Klemm, as well as nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two daughters; Peggy A. Klein and Debra S. Johnson. Also, preceding in death were her siblings; Mary Esther (Jacobs) Mueller, Elmer Jacobs, Roy Jacobs, Raymond Jacobs, Earl Jacobs, Clifford Jacobs, Melvin Jacobs (Millie's twin), Frank "Lindy" Jacobs, and Dale Jacobs.
A celebration of Millie's life will be held on March 9th, 2019 from 10:00am to 11:00am at Stemm-Lawson- Peterson Funeral Home, 1531 Cobblestone Blvd., Elkhart. Immediate family may proceed to the burial place after the memorial. Donations in memory of Millie may be made to the American Cancer Society.
