Sandra L. Polk

Sandra L. Polk, age 85 of Greenwood, IN., formerly of Elkhart, IN., went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, February 19, 2026. Sandra was born on March 28, 1940 to Eugene and Dorothy Eitel in Indianapolis, IN. Sandra married Irvin J. Polk on April 25, 1965 in Elkhart, IN. They celebrated over 44 years of marriage, until Irvin passed away on October 28, 2009.

Sandra earned her BS in Education at The Indiana Teachers College which then became Indiana State University and her master’s in education from Indiana University. She taught in the Elkhart Community School for over 39 years. She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Elkhart, IN, where she enjoyed participating in and leading various Bible studies and also lead the youth group for a period of time. She was also involved for many years with Bible Study Fellowship. She was also a leader and mentor for Lifeline and Youth for Christ Programs serving teen girls and young mothers in the Elkhart County area. Sandra enjoyed being outside walking or visiting Wellfield Botanic Gardens near her home. Most of all she loved to spend time with her family, praying and serving others and especially enjoyed staying in touch with her 4 granddaughters.

Sandra is survived by her son Marshall (Fran) Simmons of Indianapolis, IN., grandchildren Anna, Gillian, June and Abigail Simmons; her siblings, Phillip (Effie) Eitel of Indianapolis, IN, Sally (Ken) Craig of Mooresville, IN, and Sylvia (Mike) Prouty Colorado Springs, CO. and brother-in-law Paul Gathany of Springfield, OH. Sandra was preceded in death by her husband Irvin Polk, her parents Eugene and Dorothy Eitel and her sister in law Marceil Gathany.

Visitation will be from 11am- 1pm on Saturday, February 28, 2026 at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home, 1531 Cobblestone Blvd., Elkhart, IN 46514. Where funeral services will be held at 1pm. Bishop Frank J. Beard will officiate.
