Alex McArthur Obituary

Alex McArthur of Fort Pierce, Fl and Union, MI passed away peacefully at his Florida home on March 31, 2020 at the age of 94.  He was born in Chicago, IL on June 26, 1925, he retired to Michigan and subsequently spent the majority of his retirement years in Florida and Michigan. He retired from Peoples Energy of Chicago as Manager of Financial Planning in 1992 after 46 years of service.

 Alex is survived by his loving wife of 58 years Barbara Ida (Gyllstrom) and Lynn (Rob) Wygant, Erin, Jack and Kelly of Snohomish, WA; Margie (Bill) Sass, Kristen and Courtney of Frankfort, IL; Raymond (Jeanna) Burley, Olivia and Hope of New York, NY; Barbara (Scott) Radeke, Allison, Chelsea and Ben of New Lenox, IL; and James Alex Burley of IL., including many cousins far and near.  He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Elizabeth McArthur.

At the age of 20, he was drafted into the US Army 36th Infantry Division serving in France and Germany occupational forces. He was recalled for the Korean war at the age of 25 as an active reservist in June of 1950, serving as an Army Finance School instructor. In the years between his active duty, he graduated from Northwestern University in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science accounting degree. He was a perpetual member of the American Legion Post 336 in Illinois and Ancient Free and Accepted Masons in Illinois. In September of 2019, at the Northwestern University home football game, he was recognized for his military service and participated in the honor flight to Washington in November.

Alex was known for his sense of humor, storytelling, generosity and his love for tennis and Northwestern University football as well as his ability to have firsthand knowledge of almost anything. He was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Bristol, IN and also regularly attended Ocean Village Worship.

Memorial services will be held at 11:30 am on Saturday, August 8, 2020 at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home, 1531 Cobblestone Blvd., Elkhart, IN 46514 where friends may visit 30 minutes before the service.  In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Treasure Coast Hospice (www.treasurehealth.org) and Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church (www.zionbristol.org).
