Allan D. Fougerousse

September 15, 1947 — February 7, 2024

Elkhart, IN

Allan Dale Fougerousse, 76, of Elkhart, passed away Wednesday February 7, 2024 at Elkhart General Hospital. He was born September 15, 1947 in Linton, IN to Maurice and Mary Lou Fougerousse. He married Barbara Tuttle on June 1, 1974 at the United Methodist Church in Waterloo, IN.

Al honorably served his county in the United States Army National Guard in the 38th Infantry Division. Al taught science at Jimtown Junior High School for 40 years. He once did a flamingo shoot for Sandy Farrell’s Relay for Life to help raise money. The students loved it. Students would say Mr. Fougerousse made science fun. Mr. Fougerousse, Mr. Eggleston, Mr. Sauter and Mr. Davis would perform competing challenges that made the students want to attend their classes, too.  Students were Al’s life and he enjoyed spending time with them in the class or beating them at a game of dodge ball, ping pong or badminton. Although he was a teacher, he did not take summers off. He and his fellow friend and teacher, Jim Eggleston, worked as painting teachers for the summer. Al enjoyed doing financial planning. He enjoyed watching Purdue and Indiana University basketball games. In the summer he would cut his grass on his bright yellow lawn mower and in the fall, he would pick up the leaves with the mower. Al read the Elkhart Truth and The Ashville, North Carolina newspaper. Al loved spending time in Maggie Valley, NC.  When friends and family would visit North Carolina, he enjoyed catering their visit as to the current trending restaurants, trails to hike or to music venues, no trips were ever the same. He and his family enjoyed walking trails, hiking, and visiting waterfalls. One of the most memorable of family hikes was to Mt. LeConte in the Smokey Mountains for the night. Al and Barb visited over 100 waterfalls, several fire towers and hiked to mountain tops in North Carolina.  After retirement Al and Barb traveled to National Parks, Canada and Europe.

Al is survived by his wife of over 49 years, Barbara Fougerousse; their sons Nick (Sandy) Fougerousse of Chicago, IL and Jason Fougerousse of Muncie, IN and his brother Richard (Jean) Fougerousse of League City, TX. Al was preceded in death by his parents Maurice and Mary Lou Fougerousse and his stepmother Thelma Fougerousse.
