Obituary

Peg Covert, age 84, of Elkhart, passed away on Wednesday, January 27, 2021 peacefully at her home. Peg was born on January 12, 1937 in Columbus, OH to John and Mary (Pearce) Nesser. On April 19, 1958 in Columbus, OH she married the love of her life, Don Covert. She is survived by their three children, Michelyn (Gary) Lambuth of Goshen, IN., Paul Covert of Edwardsburg, MI., and Tricia Covert of Elkhart; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren; a brother James (Mary Katherine) Nesser of Marblehead, OH; and a sister Mary Kathryn (John) Sergio of Columbus, OH. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Don Covert; her parents and her brother, John Nesser.

Peg attended St.  Mary High School in Columbus, OH and graduated in 1954. She was employed at Ohio Fuel and Gas Company from 1954-1958.

Upon her marriage to Don they resided in Dayton, Ohio until 1963 when they moved to Erie, PA. In 1966 Peg and Don relocated to Elkhart, which is where they built their home, family, business and ties to the community. Soon after moving to Elkhart she volunteered with the Welcome Wagon Newcomers Club. She was also a charter member of The Four Winds Garden Club for 50 years, acting as president from 1971-1973. Peg was an active member of St. Thomas the Apostle Church and served on the board of the Rosary Society. She volunteered for the school founding “The Bucket Brigade” which helped students with learning disabilities find confidence and achieve their goals. Peg also founded Mary’s Pantry which made soup for the needy in our community. This was one of her proudest achievements. Her commitment to her faith and helping those in need was a central focus of her life. She contributed to and volunteered for many charities. Peg was most active in Kid Care, a foundation created to build a school in Tanzania, Africa.

Peg loved to travel and was so happy that she had been able to visit all 50 states, Canada, Jerusalem and Germany. She made friends where ever she went, but none could compare to her “sisters” in the Pursuit of Happiness (POH). The friendships she made early on at St. Thomas Parish School. These women were instrumental in her life through the good times and the bad.
