Velma Long Obituary

Velma Maxine Long, 102, passed away Monday November 9, 2020 at Hubbard Hill, Elkhart. She was born Aug. 15, 1918 in Hartford City, IN to Oscar and Ethel (Haney) Mannix. On April 21, 1946 in Hartford City, she married Herschel C. Long who preceded her in death on Aug. 11, 1995.

Surviving are her children, Ronald (Sharon “Cook”) Long of Ft. Wayne, IN and Lois J. (Michael) Stemm of Elkhart, grandchildren: Jennifer (Scott) Heffernan-Mabee, Stephanie (Jason) Scheele, Matthew (Brooke) Stemm and Nathan (Jessica) Stemm; 13 great-grandchildren: Gavin, Owen, Griffin, Harrison, Emerson, Madden, Lincoln, Addison, Harrison, Mia, Jack, Dallas and Peter. She was preceded in death by her siblings: Marjory Fisher, Thurman Mannix, Martha Fleck and Lois Mannix.

Maxine graduated from high school and attended Ball State University. She retired from CTS Corp in 1980. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church where she served on many committees. She was a member of Circle for Missions, Altruist Sunday School Class, Married Women’s Club of the YWCA and Church Women United. She volunteered at Babes and Hubbard Hill Auxiliary and enjoyed visiting shut-in friends

Maxine as she was known to her family and friends, had a contagious smile that everyone talked about. Back in the day she loved cooking and baking for family and friends gatherings many times up to 40 people. Her claim to fame was her homemade cinnamon rolls and her decorated Santa Clause cookies just to name a few. The gatherings continued on when she moved to Hubbard Hill in 2002 in the Villages where she resided for 10 years. There, a group of about 12 ladies would celebrate birthdays as well as St. Patrick Day, Valentine’s Day, etc. She then moved up to ”The Big House” in assisted living and eventually spent the last 4 years in healthcare.

She loved her family, attending many sporting events they participated in and loving every minute of it.

The family cannot thank the Hubbard Hill Staff enough for the love and care they have shown Maxine. She often commented how blessed and grateful she was to be able to live there.

Because of the current COVID situation, after careful consideration for their friends and extended family, the family has decided to have a private family celebration. Please feel free to reach out on the funeral home wesite or through Facebook. Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home, 1531 Cobblestone Blvd., Elkhart, IN 46514 is assisting with arrangements.
